Twitter Adds New ‘Red Verification Badge’ To Designate Users Whose Speech Is Approved By China

BEIJING, CHINA- On the heels of free speech contentions on Twitter and subsequent meetings with President Xi, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has announced Twitter’s new plan to avoid any future confusion.

Twitter will now coordinate closely with the Chinese government to issue the coveted “red checkmark” to users whose views properly reflect those of the “great and magnanimous” party controlling China. Tweets from users without this checkmark will not be visible to users in China.

“Twitter remains committed to free speech and free expression,” said Jack Dorsey. “But we have to be aware of the negatives that come with free speech, and must, therefore, avoid offending the billions of Chinese citizens who are no doubt offended by non-Communist speech.

As of publication, Lebron James and every Democrat candidate for president has received their red verification badge. Twitter has also provided a helpful guide to users who wish to pursue the red checkmark by self-policing their speech. The guide can be found here.
