A Coming Storm In The LGBTQ+ Movement

Among those who proudly fly the rainbow flag, there is a storm brewing between the LGBs and the Ts. The irreconcilable differences between gay people, who’s attractions are tied to biological sex, and transgender people, who affirm only gender identity, is coming to a boiling point. Gay conservative Brad Polumbo recently wrote about this growing rift in a piece for Quillette, suggesting perhaps it’s time for these factions to part ways.

It’s nice to see people within the movement recognize what common sense has told us for a while now, but I think Brad and those like him have missed the boat.  I can say right now that this logical split along ideological lines will never happen.

This is because the LGBTQ+ movement stopped being about these individual identities a while ago. The movement seeded by gay Americans fighting police action at Stonewall has morphed into a monster bigger than any of them can control. Why did we see gay conservatives kicked out of pride parades? Why have they shunned gay people who are pro-life?  Why have they embraced Muslim and communist movements whose interests seem to stand in direct opposition to theirs?  Why do they feel more comfortable with a straight Satanist than a gay Christian conservative?

I think it all starts to make sense when we consider the inflammatory words of Jesus in John’s gospel chapter 8.  In a dialogue with Jewish leaders, he told us there are only two types of people in this world: sons of God, and sons of the Devil.  After informing the Jewish religious leaders to their faces that they were sons of the Devil, they picked up stones to stone him with.  We can expect the same response when we talk this way in our culture, but… well, here goes.

The LGBTQ+ movement is no longer about sexual preference or gender identity. It is now a catch-all movement for those who practice moral lawlessness. It is a banner for all enemies of God.  It will continue to add more groups, identities, and letters to the soup, no matter how at conflict they seem to be with each other. Polyamory, pederasty, prostitution, Satanism, communism, it doesn’t matter. There is now only one requirement for admission: that you serve the creature rather than the Creator.

There is a painful irony to the rainbow flag of the LGBTQ+ movement. The flag they fly now stands for those who live as men did in the days of Noah.  God grew weary of the unending wickedness of men and wiped them out with a flood.  He put a rainbow in the sky to signify his promise to never flood the earth again.  It’s as if the entire movement is gleefully shaking this covenant in God’s face, daring him to go back on his promise. They would do well to read the words of scripture.  Wrath will come, but not by floodwaters.  It will be something much worse.

Which side of the flag are you on? Is there a home for love, compassion, and grace outside the LGBTQ+ movement? We Christians have an answer. There is a greater love, a deeper grace, and truer compassion that doesn’t fly the rainbow flag. It holds up a cross. Let us invite the L’s, the G’s, the B’s and the T’s, along with all the other lost sheep, to come and lay their burdens down at the feet of the same savior who gave himself for each one of us.  There is room for everyone in our movement because we’re all in the same boat: we have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. And on the other side of the cross is something truly beautiful: a new identity that supersedes all others. We are children of God.
