Worship of a King

God’s image in progressivism (Part 2)

We are all worshipers. Every single one of us. The word “worship” is now typically associated with religion, but its old English meaning simply describes the act of ascribing ultimate “worth” to something. We were created that way for a reason. There is a being of ultimate worth who created our hearts to long for Him. There is no exception to this. All of us have hearts that longing to worship. We will either worship the one we were designed to worship, or we will attempt to satisfy that longing with something, anything, else. The story of history has been replete with sorry substitutes for God- evil kings and tyrannical regimes.

The reason tyranny is so common throughout human history is that human beings are quick to raise up objects of worship. It comes as natural to us as breathing.

Trump derangement syndrome

I think that’s a huge reason why “Trump Derangement Syndrome” has tormented so many of our friends on the Left. With Trump in the White House, Americans no longer have an appropriate object of worship in high places. Trump is a reprobate. He is not someone we can adore and admire. He has left millions of natural worshipers without an object of worship. No wonder they are going insane.

For many on the Right, however, there is no need for Trump to be that figure. Most on the Right believe in God and therefore find their security, hope, and comfort in Jesus, the only worthy object of worship. To them, Trump is just a mercenary. He’s a sanitation engineer we’ve hired to drain a putrid swamp. We don’t care how he talks, who he sleeps with, or what he tweets. We don’t need a role model. We already have Jesus.

The one true king

Next time you talk to someone who is tormented with insecurity and frustration at the antics of Trump, talk to them about the King you serve. Our King is wise, just, and gentle. He reigns forever, he’s not up for re-election, and holds every earthly king’s heart in his hands- including Trump’s. If I didn’t have that hope, I would probably go insane too!

So when we think of those on the Left who are feeling lost and hopeless in the Trump era, let’s keep in mind what they are going through. Perhaps we can help a few of our neighbors find comfort in the arms of the one true King.
